As someone with uneven skin tone and dark spots, color correcting is a crucial step in my makeup routine. For my specific color-correcting concerns, using orange or warm shades helps offset the gray tones that can show through even after using a heavy-duty concealer. Although there are plenty of color correctors on the market to target different needs, only a handful cater to my exact needs of concealing hyperpigmentation. And the one I can't stop using is the viral Huda Beauty #Fauxfilter Color Corrector ($30).
What makes this color corrector stand out? It comes in a wide range of shades in two undertones to target one concern: an uneven complexion. The bestselling color corrector promises to brighten and visibly correct targeted areas with a blendable, creamy formula that's long-lasting. One of my all-time favorite concealers is from the brand's #FauxFilter line, and I'm now adding the color corrector to my must-have list. Ahead, you can read why the Huda Beauty #Fauxfilter Color Corrector is worth the hype.
What I Like About the Huda Beauty #Fauxfilter Color Corrector
I have stubborn hyperpigmentation on my laugh-line area and it requires layers and layers of full-coverage concealer. That gives me an unnecessarily cakey look, especially in an area prone to creasing. Using the Huda Beauty #Fauxfilter Color Corrector in Mango cancels out those underlying gray and ashy tones from my hyperpigmentation by adding warmth back into that area. With this additional color-correcting step, I don't need to layer on so much concealer, nor do I need to use something full coverage. It was an instant game-changer in my makeup routine, allowing me to do more by using less.
Beyond its color-correcting ability, the formula is easy to work with as long as you use it sparingly. The liquid formula is not so thin that it spreads all over the place or doesn't show up, nor is it so thick that it leaves a pigmented splotch. It blends into my complexion with a weightless, flexible finish that doesn't settle into lines. I can also layer my other products without worrying about the corrector shifting or coming off. The color corrector stays put while I apply and buff my foundation or concealer for a streak-free finish.
How to Use the Huda Beauty #Fauxfilter Color Corrector
The brand suggests using the color corrector after your skin care and before any other makeup. However, I like using the E.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter as a primer or tinted sunscreen first, then going in with the Fauxfilter Color Corrector. I lightly dot a small amount of the color corrector using the doe-foot applicator in areas with discoloration, which for me are the hyperpigmentation around my mouth and my laugh lines as well as dark spots from previous breakouts and zits. I use a dense concealer brush to gently pat and blend it into my skin for a more seamless look. After it dries down and settles, I apply my foundation as usual and spot conceal using the #Fauxfilter Concealer where needed. I finish my base by setting it in place with the brand's bestselling Easy Bake Setting Powder.
What to Consider Before Trying the Huda Beauty #Fauxfilter Color Corrector
A little does go a long way with this color corrector - the brand suggests only using at most three dots to correct your undereye area. If you use too much, you run the risk of looking like an Oompa Loompa. Since you're not applying a lot of product, the color corrector should last a long time in your collection and won't need to be replaced often.
It's also important to determine the right shade for your skin tone and undertone - going too dark, too light, or using the wrong undertone can also deliver unflattering results. If you have a cool undertone, you'll need something that has a pink base. Shades Cherry Blossom (light), Pink Pomelo (medium-tan), and Lychee (tan-deep) are your best bet. If you have a warm undertone, peach and orange-based shades will complement your complexion; the Peach (light-medium), Mango (medium-tan), Papaya (tan-deep), and Blood Orange (deep) shades will work best for your needs. You can find out if you are cool or warm by taking our undertone quiz here.
Another good trick to finding your corrector shade is to look for the shade that closely resembles your skin tone and even complements it - almost like the corrector seamlessly blends in. As someone with a neutral undertone, I used this hack to determine that Mango is my go-to correcting shade.
